Why storage is a fleet cost, not an extra
Devices are rarely broken in use. They are broken in a van footwell, at the bottom of a tool bag, or on a bench under something heavier. For a fleet of any size the replacement rate is set by how devices are handled between tasks rather than during them, which makes protection the cheapest part of a deployment to get right and one of the most expensive to skip.
Shared-device teams have a second reason to standardize storage: a defined place for each device makes handover between shifts checkable. Devices that live in a labelled slot get returned. Devices that live wherever the last user left them get hunted for at the start of every shift, and that time comes out of the working day.
